Maryland Wins MD/VA Senior All-Star Match

A tremendous crowd was on hand Saturday, March 15, at Woodson HS to watch some of the finest seniors in Maryland and Virginia go head-to-head in the second annual DC area showcase of wrestling talent. Fourteen state finalists (12 state champions), including four national contending wrestlers, guaranteed the Virginia dominated crowed would not be disappointed.

The match was held only three days after Maryland's Senior All-Star Classic and one week after its state championships. These events, along with college visit demands, hurt Maryland in finding seniors willing to compete. However, after loosing to Virginia last year, Maryland's Head Coach Bruce Gabrielson was determined and worked hard to bring some of its best regional talent. With the recruiting help of Maryland 1A/2A Champion Lackey High School's Coach Terry Green, the final Maryland team featured some outstanding individuals.

Maryland was led by three time state champ and #2 nationally ranked Jason Gabrielson of Northern HS, three time state champ Scott Muncie of Weaton HS, and three time state champ Jeremy Lignelli of Glen Echo HS. Virginia was led by state champs Pierre Pryor of Frank Cox HS, Ron Blunt of Hayfield HS, and Brent Lancaster also of Hayfield HS. Big matchups were at 119 where Jason Gabrielson faced VA State runner-up Gary Lewis of Oscar Smith HS, 140 where state champs Muncie and Pryor faced off, 152 where MD state champ Ryan Green of Ligenore HS met VA state runner-up Christian Devol of Hermitage HS, and at 189 where VA state champ Lancaster faced two time MD state champ Ryan Hoffman of Thomas Johnson HS.
