SMWC All-Star 2002/2003 Schedule

SMWC 2003 Spring Schedule

SMWC All-Star Picnic - June 14th

SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member and University of North Carolina wrestler Evan Sola becomes 2003 NCAA Div I All-American with 7th place finish.

SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member, 3 time National Champion, and World Cup Runner-up Jim Howard will put on a high amplitude throwing clinic for SMWC members on Wednesday, March 26th, at the Thomas Stone practice.

SMWC's Zack Pilkenton wins USYWA E&M Nationals in the 50 lb class in Chester, WV this weekend.

If there is sufficient interest, SMWC will hold a freestyle duel against the All-Maryland Team this season. If any members happen to speak to Cornell Bass, please ask him to email Coach G.

SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member, ex-Olympian, winner of numerous National Championships, and Jump Rope Super Star Buddy Lee put on a tremendous clinic for members at the Thomas Stone practice March 17th. Fourty-four wrestlers plus seven high school and club coaches listened as Buddy told his story about the many challenges he had in climbing to the top of his sport. Buddy put on one of his famous jump rope shows plus showed some of the moves that made him a champion. SMWC's current nationally ranked high school wrestlers, Rudy Rueda, Mike Rowe, and Brent Jones assisted Buddy in his demonstrations. It was a great event for wrestling in Southern Maryland.

SMWC All-Stars Win 2002/2003 MD/VA Beltway State Championships

When the going gets tough, the SMWC All-Stars get tougher. This was a great win for us considering we may have one of the smallest teams in the state and forfeit several weight classes. You should all be proud of how well you secceed. Based on how our older wrestlers do every year, our 8 graders will move on to greatness in high school as well. Also, the overall quality of the tournament was very good this year, far surpassing any other youth event in this region. We only had 1 champion, Tim Timothy at 150 lbs. However, we had 5 seconds and 3 thirds. The club had a nice meal at Damons after it was over. Team results for top 10 teams: 1. Southern MD 218.0, 2. Mount Airy 204.5, 3. Vipers 204.0, 4. Gaithersburg 196.5, 5. Owings Mills 139,5, 6. Golden Ring 116.5, 7. Warriors 107.5, 8. Stafford 101.5, 9. Fallston 101.0, 10. Perry Hall 91.0

SMWC Hall-of-Fame members Chris Rodregues and Evan Sola won at the ACC Championships and will be at NCAAs this next week.

Any members going to the age-wt states at River Hill this weekend should send your information to Pam Farringer (Pfaringe@PGCPS.org immediately so she can add you to the team roster she will be submitting. Walt Hoffman should have the team roster at the tournament.

As required by law to maintain our non-profit status, SMWC held it's annual meeting at practice on Wednesday, March 12th. A large number of members where present. We didn't have much to discuss other then club rules for who is allowed to participate on tournament or duel meet teams and membership restrictions for those who belong to multiple clubs. Although Coach G tried to get out of it, the Rowe's made sure he was nominated and voted in as the club president for this next year. Coach G mentioned that he is looking hard for a new SMWC head coach.

Some bad news for the All-Stars. CAWL Champ Kyle Bybee hurt his knee on Sunday and will not be at practice this week.

Although it went on the same time as the HS senior classic, we had a good turnout at Northwestern March 11th. Several open wrestlers were there.

We had a very good turnout for our first spring practice at Thomas Stone March 10th. As is our custom each spring, a newly crowned HS state champ ran the warm-up. Last night it was Derrik McDermott's turn(left). We also had several HS state placers working out (right). Both freestyle and folkstyle moves and situations were practiced. Also, Coach G went over the rules about who can compete on our duel teams and our tournament teams this summer, and also our rules regarding practicing and working with our sister club Hayfield. Next week is spring break and several of SMWC's college wrestlers will be holding clinics at practice.

Please ask around if anyone is interested in the Head Coaching position for SMWC this spring. If we can't find a coach we will have a difficult time running a program. We need a coach right away.

SMWC Hall-of-Fame nominations are being taken at this time. Nominations can be submitted by any club member. Criteria for nomination is listed in the SMWC Constitution and By-Laws. Those selected will be announced at our annual picnic this spring.

It was a long day on Sunday, March 9th, but the SMWC All-Stars (left) again won the CAWL League Championships by almost 30 points over a very tough Gaithersberg team. Individual SMWC winners included Corey Keener, Kyle Mason, Ryan Mikula, Nicole Woody, Steve Sargent, Kyle Bybee, Mat Jones, and Tom Timothy. Kyle Mason also captured the OW. There was a 3-way tie for the season duel meet title (right).

Big weekend for SMWC HS wrestlers. At the Maryland Public School Championships, SMWC Champions included Sonni Nucci, Derrik McDermott, Eli Black, and Chad Nkang.

Isn't it great to see SMWC's legacy carry on. Many folks know that a large number of Maryland's and Virginia's current high school coaches are past SMWC members. What you might not know is that a large number of SMWC members continue to participate outside the high school environment even after their college careers are over. This past weekend at the NCAA East Regional Qualifier, SMWC's Jason Gabrielson (asst coach Millersville) did very well with several NCAA Div I qualifiers as did SMWC's Billy Hildbold (asst coach at Slipprey Rock). SMWC's Todd Beckerman and Troy Sunderlund are coaching at Penn State while Marc Hoffer helps coach at American. Another SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member is Jeff Rosenberg, currently league commissioner with the Vipers youth league.

SMWC HS State Champions in Virginia this year included Dirk Hern and Todd Smoot. Good job all.

Attention younger wrestlers who plan to practice this spring. We will have at least two freestyle matches besides the tournament schedule. Only those who attend on a regular basis will be eligable for our dual events. All youth wrestlers will be expected to maintain tight discipline during practice with no playing or talking during instruction times. Also, with older wrestlers in the room, both you and your parents must ensure you stay in the area assigned during drills.

With all the HS wrestlers present, we are starting to have much larger practices. Please try to show up on time. Official pracitces for our spring club start March 11th at Northwestern and March 12th at Stone. Our annual meeting will be held at Stone March 12th. This year we will have an open age, high school age, and youth all-star freestyle team for match competitions. Check with Coach G for details concerning wrestle-off nights. Also, due to limited space, we will again limit how many can be in the room for practice at any one time - first come first serve.

Regarding Title IX, in a statement made through a spokesman on Feb. 26, Secretary of Education Rod Paige has indicated that he will only consider the proposals forwarded by the federal Title IX Commission that were passed unanimously. This position would wipe out all of the work by the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics to reform Title IX. THIS POSITION WOULD ALLOW FOR THE CONTINUED ELIMINATION OF OLYMPIC SPORTS SUCH AS WRESTLING, SWIMMING, GYMNASTICS, TRACK, BASEBALL AND OTHERS. This position will also allow the few dissenting voices, led by quota advocates Julie Foudy and Donna DeVarona, to throw out all of the ideas passed by the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics that they did not agree with. All members are asked to immediately contact Mr. Rod Paige, Secretary of Education, 400 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington, DC 20202, E-mail: rod.paige@ed.gov or FAX: (202)260-7867 and voice your outrage over this position.

SMWC currently has 3 members on active duty in the Middle East and one other member whose brother is there. Since this is National Military Appreciation Month, please go to the following site and take a few moments to indicate your support: http://www.defendamerica.mil/nmam.html

The SMWC All-Stars finished up their season by defeating a tough Bandit squad and then another tough Stafford squad later in the day. In the duel standings we ended in a three way tie for first with Damascus and Gaithersburg.

Current SMWC members had a tremendous showing at the 3A/4A Regionals this past weekend. Champions included: 103- Lucus Black, 112- Ryan Buff, 130- Bryan McDermott, 135- Ross Draheim, 152- Eli Black, 160- Tommy Priestly, 171- Walt Hoffman, 189- Matt Parsons, and 215- Chad Nkang. Good luck to all at the Maryland Public HS State Championships.

SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member Evan Sola is on a roll. So far he has had one of the best seasons in the ACC. His current record is 14-1 since his one loss at the Virginia Duals 3-2 to Jayne from Illinois. Go for it Evan and become SMWC's next NCAA All-American. We're rooting for you.

Dematha HS is looking for an experienced assistant coach. Interested experienced applicants should contact Dick Messier. SMWC is also looking for a freestyle coach for spring. Decent pay plus a chance to work with many of Maryland's finest.

Good turnout for practice Feb 24th. Mike Rowe and Ryan Buff worked with The heavier All-Stars. Mike says he and SMWC's Brent Jones will be practicing at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this summer.

Who says our off-season and youth programs aren't tremendously successful? SMWC HS Wrestlers Have Big Weekend.

SMWC high school members had a great weekend Feb 22 and 23. Fresh off their private high school state titles, SMWC Hall-of-Fame members Rudy Rudea and Mike Rowe completed successful seasons by winning National Preps at Lehigh. Rudy is now a three time champion and Mike a two time champion. At the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Championships, the finals looked like a regular practice. Both Blacks, Buff, McDermott, Draheim, Hoffman and Parsons all took home gold. As a side note, we expect more high school wrestlers to start showing up at practices this week. Look for Ruda and Rowe working with everyone and Buff getting ready for a state title.

We will make-up the duals that we did not wrestle at Centreville. They will be made up on Sunday, March 2nd at Parkside Middle School in Manasas. This Sunday Coach Jones would like as many people as can to wrestle in Delmarva youth tournament at Kent Island HS, in Stevensville Md. You can register at the door for $20, and weigh-in there. Weigh-in are Saturday 7-8 PM, and Sunday 6:30-8:00 am.

SMWC's Buddy Lee reports his book, "Jump Rope Training" will be published by Human Kinetics on April 22. Buddy also promises to make a practice for a clinic this spring.

Too much snow is causing us all kinds of problems. Don't have a good date for the match make-up yet.

Kyle Mason and Tommy Timothy each placed first at the VA Middle School States in Norfolk.

Note from Nathan's dad: The Doctor is letting Nate do some activities that are not directly impacting the knee. He still needs to go to therapy though as he has some fluid remaing in the joint. The fluid shows on the MRI but is not visible when you look at the knee. The ligament was loose as the Doctor show us the additional lateral movement of the right knee compared with the left.

The SMWC Spring Flyer is now available for distribution. The MSWA spring schedule is also out. We have a serious problem attending the MSWA event this year as it conflicts with our beltway states as well as conflicting with the SMJWL championships. It's likely there will be very few kids show for the tournament this year from our club. This will be the first time in many years we won't compete for the team title. As we've pointed out many times over the years, MSWA really needs to consider other organizations and events before they schedule their own events.

SMWC defeated Culpeper in a close one (48 – 28), defeated Bull Run (84-24) and defeated Hylton (74-30) on February 9th.

SMWC placed 2nd as a team at Oxford. Placers as follows, 1st Kyle Mason, Shane Cockerille, Jonathan Faringer, and Matt Jones. 2nd Ryan Mikula, Jeff Williams, Eric Hoffman, Nicole Woody, and Corey Keener in two different classes. 3rd was Kyle Bybee and Wes Jones, 4th Steve Sargent. Congratulations

Injuries to report - Hunter Fairchild's knee is bruised at the femur. Nathan is also out with a knee injury. SMWC's Kevin Gabrielson, who has been injured since his first match last fall, finally had an operation to fix his hand this past week. He will likely miss the rest of the season at NC State.

Coach G gave some NC State posters out at practice Wed to those who attended the NC State vs. U of Md Match. He also mentioned he will be gone for three practices. Coach Jones will run practice while Coach G is away.

SMWC's Corey Keener won the Rancocas, New Jersey Tournament on January 19th. Then won the Warriors tournament at McDonogh on Feb 01 and the Oley Valley PA tournament on Feb 02.

SMWC's Mike Rowe won at the Hammond HS tournament. He also has a nice article in the Washington Post

After our Gaithersberg match on Sat, several members, including some of our HS members, attended the NC State match against the U of Maryland. Those who were there were treated to a great matchup, including a chance to see two SMWC members (left), Jason Kiessling and Kevin Gabrielson in action.

All the gory details posted here. - illnesses and a fluke pin did us under against Gaithersburg. They just have too good a team this year for us to slip by with a win. They did loose to Damascus though so we are now in a three way tie for 1st. We do not have a chance to wrestle them a duel meet again.

Hot off the press - SMWC has two new heavier wrestlers (115 lbs and 130 lbs) who joined this week. They will really add some firepower to our already repeat state champ (Mat at 140 lbs) and our undefeated and potential state champ at 150 lbs. We also have one more potential upper weight wrestler at 120 lbs Nicole has promised to bring. SMWC's chances at another state team title get better every day. Sounds like a couple more 8th graders have made the decision to step it up so they can become HS contenders next year.

Bad decision on Calvert County's part to close schools today. Roads were fine. Really hurt our SMWC members on Northern HS's team who were competing at Hammond. CC public schools need to "get a life".

SMWC's Corey Keener won the 27th annual Solanco Youth tournament with 3 pins. He also won the Arthur Brown Memorial Outstanding Wrestler Award given to the champion with the most pins in the least amount of time.

The SMWC All-Stars defeated Damascus 63-40 and the Knights 69-9 on January 4th. Ryan Mikula (left) and Jonathan Farringer looked tough as did everyone who came through for us. We were missing a few members competing on the Mason-Dixon teams plus we still do not have a full line-up of wrestlers from 110 lbs up. If you are interested in competing for the #1 advanced beltway level youth club in the DC region and one of the best in the country, come by a practice.

SMWC's Jeff Williams, Ryan Mikula and Kyle Bybee took 1st at Bel Air (group picture).

SMWC's Ryan Buff, Randy Oats, Walt Hoffman and Matt Parsons all won at the Northern HS Tournament

SMWC's Jeff Williams, Steve Sargent, Kyle Bybee, and Ryan Mikula all won at Walkersville.

SMWC's Corey Keener (right) is having a tremendous season. Corey took 1st Place at the Norwalk, St. Paul, Ohio tournament on 22 December where he had 3 pins. He also won the Golden Ring tournament on December 28th and then traveled to Providence Rhode Island the next day and won the Providence Open.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our SMWC community.

Virus alert - someone on our email list has contracted a computer virus. This virus uses our list to randomly select members to mail itself around. Pam has received emails with the virus at work. Coach G uses a firewall virus checker so the emails don't get through but others without a current virus protection program should be on their guard. Comp USA has a sale on VP and Internet firewall programs by Norton for $100.

Coach G wore his Huntington Beach HS Wrestling shirt at practice on Monday night. He got everyone together for a picture afterwards that he plans to send to his school. Also, everyone was reminded that on Wednesday cookie dough orders will be delivered.

SMWC's Cory Keener continued his win streak with a win at Mt St Joe. Also winning were SMWC's Matt Jones and Steve Sargent.

Nicole Woody was one of the SMWC All-Stars who won big against Olney and Montgomery Generals on Saturday. We will update with the many exhibition scores when we get them. Also, our team is in serious need of some larger wrestlers. We have no-one between 110 and 130 in our lineup. If you can think of anyone who wants to start on one of the this region's premier teams, have them come to a practice right away.

SMWC's Kyle Mason, Steve Sargent, Nathan Peck, Mat Jones, and Tom Timothy all won at the CAWL Pre-Season tournament.

SMWC's Corey won the Smyrna Delaware tournament on 7 Dec 2002 with 3 pins.

SMWC's Kyle Mason and (glory be) Nathan Peck won at the Viper's tournament Dec 1st.

Coach G has been busy. He gave a clinic at Huntington Beach HS in California on December 10th. He also visited with Golden West College that week. He put on a clinic at Stonewall Jackson HS two weeks ago as well. Look for more special clinics and appearances around the country this winter as he will be travelling a lot.

SMWC's Cory Keener and Nicloe Woody won at Dundalk. Several others were there but didn't place. That's what happens when you haven't been practicing on a regular basis.

SMWC member David Pike sent a note that he left a Cliff Keen Tornado headgear at practice in early summer. Anyone who has information on this should contact Coach G immediately.

Coach G attended a Hayfield practice on Tuesday and the Stone practice on Wednesday. He was dissappointed. It appears that there is very little interest in continuing with the beltway program at either school. If participation does not improve immediately expect the youth program to be dropped there. Your call. All other teams in the state are going strong and participating in the major tournaments going on now.

SMWC's Corey Keener won the Crestwood Pennsylvania tournament on 10 November he had 3 pins. SMWC's Nicole Woody went to the Culpeper tournamnet. She was seeded last. That got her fired up........no one scored on her and she pinned everyone and took first place.

Our mat was moved from Riverdale to Stone on Wed before practice. Thanks to those who helped.

SMWC All-Star practices for our beltway team will start November 11th. We will practice on Mon-Wed, 6:30pm to 8:30 pm at Thomas Stone HS in Waldorf and Tues-Thurs, 6:30pm to 8:30 pm at Hayfield HS in Alexandria. League fees will be $90 per wrestler. High School age wrestlers who are SMWC members will be allowed to practice with us at Maryland practices again this year so long as they can provide their own workout partner. Youth league wrestlers in other programs will not be allowed to practice with us once their season starts except as agreed to by Head Coach Rick Jones at Virginia practices. Those wrestlers who have not participated in pre-season club practices need to be in shape before starting as we will move quickly for the first few weeks. Check the new SMWC All-Star Flyer out here.

SMWC's Eric Hoffman is on a mission. He won in Gaithersberg with 5 straight pins.

All open mat practices have now ended at Thomas Stone. Official club dues are now due and payable. Family membership is $30 per year and lasts into summer. Only those who are at a practice for the first time, are current members, or who attend the school where we practice will be allowed to participate beginning next week.

Only a small turnout at Northwestern for our first night back. Hopefully there will be more interest in PG County this pre-season.

Great practice Monday night at Thomas Stone. Plenty of kids of all sizes. Coach Jason was on hand to work with some of the high school kids.

SMWC's Corey Keener captured 1st place at the Prince Georges county Virginia fall kick off classic on 12 October in the 50lb weight class.

SMWC's Ryan Buff captured 1st in Novice 122 lbs at St Marks. Ryan doesn't look that big at practice.

Due to the sniper shooting at Tasker Middle School, SMWC will not hold practice tonight, October 7th.

Fair turnout for the first night at Northwestern. Ten wrestlers and coaches worked numerous drills and live situations. Some Virginia wrestlers commented on Northwestern being much closer then Riverdale to attend and all commented on how nice the room and school are.

A good first night turn-out of 17 wrestlers and coaches showed for our Thomas Stone HS practice (pictured) on Monday night, September 30th. It was great to see long time SMWC members Joe Higgs and Marty Margolis at a regular practice again. We started with basic drills and about 45 minutes of live wrestling. Lisa Ruda has decided to help coach the girls contingent we now have at every practice.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - SMWC all age practices will unofficially start on Monday, September 30th, 6:30-8:30 pm at Thomas Stone HS in Waldorf and on Tuesday, October 1st at Northwestern HS in Hyattsville near the University of Maryland. There will be open mat practices on Wed at Stone and Thursday at Northwestern. Dues will not be charged until all facility use permits have been approved and our USAW club membership with insurance riders have been completed. Dues are $30 for a family membership and will last through summer. To participate when open mats end, you will also need to purchase your own USAW card and abide by the rules contained in the SMWC Constitution and Bylaws.

Great Quote on 9/11 - "We have been attacked for who we are by people who have no idea who we are."

SMWC has been notified by Riverdale Baptist that the school intends to sell its mat and eliminate all wrestling activities this fall. The announcement comes late in our regular planning and scheduling process and a move will likely impact our members in different ways. Hopefully, we will find another centralized location and remain in the general area this year.

Can you believe the jealousy that exists in Maryland and the garbage that gets posted on the local forum. The Maryland AAU gets upset that SMWC doesn't belong to their association (we belong to and practice in Potomac Valley AAU) and big mouths blame Coach G??? Coach G holds a special surf camp for SMWC members and folks complain about it. Our club has a club party and Coach G holds another luau party for adults only and the losers still complain about member pictures here. Hey, stay off our pages and out of our activities. At least our club holds some events outside of wrestling. This is a private site for members and friends only. Nonmembers have no say in what we do or how much fun we have. And finally, neither the SMWC members or coaches care what nonmembers say or do.
