Practices will start for the fall season the third week of September on Monday and Wednesday nights

Beltway Team Update - Based on the number of advanced youth wrestlers who participated with our club last winter and the interest expressed in beltway level competition by local junior league leaders, SMWC plans to participate as a team again this next season. coaches to lead the team are currently being sought.

ANNUAL LUAU PARTY - Coach Gs annual luau was greatly impacted this year due to Hurricane Ernesto hitting our area the day before it was scheduled on Sept 2nd. He had no power until 5:15 pm, but several die-hard members still managed to attend. SMWC inducted three new members into it's Hall-of-Fame: Tod Smoot, Lucus Black, and Ryan Buff.

SMWC's Nicole Woody Wins Worlds- SMWC's Nicole Woody won her first Junior World Title this past week. The last time a member made it to the finals at Junior Worlds was Stanley Proctor who finished 2nd in the 1980s. Way to go Nicole.

Coach Jason's Wrestling Camp a Big success - Many area wrestlers and SMWC members attended Coach Jason's camp Aug 7-11 at Bishop McNamara HS. Among the SMWC All-Americans and members who worked and ran sessions were Evan Sola, Wade Hughs, Todd Beckerman, Mark Samples, and Mike Rowe.

Kolat and Brands hold Mini-Camp at McNamara - Olympians Cary Kolat and Tom Brands held a mini-camp at Bishop McNamara High School on July 7th.

Coach Jason's Wedding - Many SMWC dignatories, past and present, were on hand for Coach Jason's wedding In Elizabethtown, PA, June 20th. The music was great and most everyone danced until their feet gave out. The picture is a group shot of wrestlers and coaches on hand. Jason and Jill plan to fly to Austin, TX this week to attend another SMWC wrestler's wedding, William McKinney.

- All club practices have ended for the summer. Practices will start again in early September.

Club FS Championships - All members are asked to enter the MSWA East Coast Freestyle Championships and Club Championships on June 10th at River Hill HS. We will compete as Maryland WC.

Good Turnout for MD St Chs - SMWC had a good trunour of members for the MSWA Freestyle State Championships at McDonough HS in Baltimore on May 21st. Coach George Taylor was one of the winners.

Pan Am Games Qual at American Univ - American University hosted the USAW Pan American Games qualifier at Bender Arena on Saturday. The picture shows Coach G and the other Level 1 officials invited to participate. Kim Gabrielson was the official photographer for the event. After the event. USAW asked Coach G if they could use his article Wrestling's 5 Styles, to explain the differences between Sombo and other wrestling styles.

Jason Gabrielson's Technique/Intensive Camp - Coach Gabrielson's Technique/Intensive Camp is scheduled for August 7-11 at Bishop McNamara High School. Among the NCAA D1 All-Americans who will be presenting sessions are Todd Beckerman, Evan Sola. Mark Samples, and Wade Hughs. Other notables include Andre Brenner, Mike Rowe, Drew robertson, Rudy Rueda, Kevin Gabrielson, Scott McAdoo, and Derek Sola. Maryland WC 3rd at VA Club Duels - SMWC and Wildcat WC joined forces for a team entry at the recent Virginia Club Duels. Team Coaches were Jason Gabrielson and Bill Royer. Despite very questionable weigh-ins and some weak officiating, the team did well. The next event this team will compete in will be the East Coast Freestyle Club Championships.

SMWC Votes Bylaws Ammendment - A formal SMWC meeting was held immediately after practice on Monday, April 3, 2006 to vote on ammended changes to the SMWC Constitution and Bylaws. Club President Bruce Gabrielson read each of the three changed sections and then asked for a vote. The changes were requested by the IRS so the club would comply with current rules regarding non-profit organizations. All ammendments requested were approved.

Formal Announcement of Constitution and Bylaws Amendment - SMWCs Annual Meeting is held at the first spring practice each year. It is at that time changes to our Constitution and Bylaws are normally made. However, the IRS has recently requested SMWC change its Constitution and Bylaws to reflect more specific non-profit requirements, primarily changes in Article II, Article XII, and Article XIII. Therefore, this notice serves as the official announcement that a vote on proposed changes will take place prior to the next SMWC practice on Monday, April 3, 2006. Members may review the Constitution and Bylaws, including the full text of the proposed changes by clicking the current link to on our website or by contacting Bruce Gabrielson, SMWC PResident, or Head Coach Jason Gabrielson.

Buff and Randell Named to All-Calvert Team - SMWC's Edwin Randell and Ryan Buff were named to the All Calvert County Team this week. Ryan also won Wrestler of the Year honors.

Spring Practices and Freestyle - Spring practices are well underway on Mon-Wed 7 - 9 pm. Currently about 35 members are attending every night. If there is bad weather, we will start later as McNamara's varsity teams will be practicing inside until about 7:30 pm. The pictures are from our first practice of the season.

Jones and Smoot Win VA HS States - SMWC's Matt Jones captured the Virginia AAA HS State Championships at 165 lbs and SMWC's Todd Smoot captured the VA A HS State Championships at 135 lbs.

Buff and Black Win MD HS States - SMWC members Ryan Buff, wrestling for Calvert (1A/2A), and Lucus Black, wrestling for Chopticon (3A/4A), each won their respective weight classes at the Maryland Public HS State Championships.

Faust Wins ACC - SMWC Hall-of-Fame member Mike Faust, wrestling for Virginia Tech, won the Atlantic Coast Championships title at 285

Bannister Wins Private States - SMWCs Andrew Bannister (left - Wrestling for Bishop McNamara) won both the Maryland Private HS State Championships and the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Congratulations Andrew.

Buff and Randell Win SMAC Titles - SMWC's Ryan Buff and Edwin Randell each captures individual titles in the Southern MAryland Athletic conference.

Coach G Gives Clinics - Coach G gave two folkstyle clinics during his recent visit to Southern California during Thanksgiving. His clinics were at Huntington Beach HS and Foothill HS. He also helped at a freestyle practice at Surfside Wrestling Club. Hayden Wins Bel Air - SMWC member Kyle Hayden won the Bel Air Tournament Nov 13th.

New Dues Schedule - Due to our increased facilities cost, the new dues schedule is as follows: $60/yr family, $50/year individual, $35 per wrestler FO only, $25 per wrestler FS only

Practice Starts - Practices started on Sep 21st at Bishop McNamara HS. Thirteen wrestlers attended our first night making the practice a complete success.

SMWC Applies for Non-Profit Status - SMWC has formally applied to be an independent non-profit organization.
