SMWC Members Shine at NCAAs - Five SMWC members made thee trek to Michigan this past week for the NCAA Division 1 Championships. We didn't come home with any medals this time, but each of our members did well. Members competing included Jason Kiessling (Maryland), Evan Sola (UNC), Rudy Rueda and Mike Cannon (American), and Matt Evelith (Penn). Jason, Matt, and Evan are seniors but watch out for Rudy, Mike, and other new stars next year. Pictured are Coach G with David and Jim Hazewinkle (left) and Big Rudy with his family (right)

The Yellow Mat Says Goodby - After 20 years, SMWC's small yellow mat has gone on to better usage. Still in excellent condition, the mat featured our old K for Kettering on its surface. For the past several years the mat was used as a second mat only rolled out when crowded conditions existed. We will miss you.

Sola and Kiessling win ACC's - SMWC Hall-of-Fame members Evan Sola (133 pictured) and Jason Kiessling (165) won respective titles at this year's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. They each head next to Michigan to compete in the NCAA Division 1 Championships.

Jones Wins VA States - SMWC's Matt Jones easily captured his second straight Virginia AAA State Championships in style with a win in the 171 lb finals.

Gillett Wins 1A/2A - Defending state champ, SMWC's Devon Gillett, captured is second Maryland 1A/2A title in the 112 lb weight class.

Bannister Wins States - SMWC's Andrew Bannister won his second Maryland Independent High School state title this past weekend. He dominated his opponent in the finals.

Big Practices - If you didn't practice during Christmas break you really missed a chance for great workouts.

Kiessling named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week - SMWC Hall-of-Fame member and University of Maryland senior Jason Kiessling has been tabbed the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week. Kiessling earns the honor after going 2-0 in Maryland's last two duals against No. 18 Nebraska and VMI to improve his record on the season to 10-3.

Nebraska vs. Maryland - Many SMWC members attended the Nebrask vs. Maryland wrestling match on Sat. In action were two SMWC Hall-of-Fame Members, Mike Rowe and Jason Kiessling. Shown at left are Jason, Coach G, and Mike and at right are several SMWC members who are now coaches with Mike. Both Jason and Mike has little trouble with their matches and both teams looked good.

Beltway Matches Starting - December 3rd (CAWL Pre-Season), Dec 10 (Outlaw Duels), Dec 16 (Cougar Duels)

Thanksgiving Week Practice Schedule Good practice with lots of kids on Monday night. 6-8 pm practice on Wednesday, 8-10 am practice on Friday with HS for beltway only wrestlers.

Zack Robertson - It is with great sorrow we report the loss on one of our own, Zack Robertson, brother of SMWC Hall-of-Fame Member Drew Robertson, and a team mate of many of our beltway wrestlers from years past, pased on today. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Robertson family. There will be a viewing on Sunday from 7-9 pm at Gash's Funeral Home in Hyattsville, just off Alt Rt 1, with the funeral at 10 am on Monday.

George Taylor named as SMWC Beltway Team Coach Long time SMWC member George Taylor will take the reigns of the SMWC beltway youth team this season. George, who wrestled at Thomas Stone HS, can be reached at 240 216-6401 for questions about the team.

Beltway Team Status - Based on the number of advanced youth wrestlers who participated with our club last winter and the interest expressed in beltway level competition by wrestlers attending so far, SMWC plans to participate as a team again this next season. Coach Taylor has agreed to coach the team.

Season Dues - Dues will not change this year. Family dues are $35 for the fall season or $50 for the fall and spring season.
